
The pond in the middle of the pic above is called 'upper lake pohangina' and is a small shallow pond that collects the overflow water from the 'spring pond' (unseen to the left). This pond was created so that the head of 'lake pohangina (part of the lake which you can see beyond 'upper lake pohangina') did not need to be made so high to allow water to back up to the 'spring pond head'. As a consequence this small shallow pond is an ideal habitat for many of our wetland friends.
